“Totino’s Restaurant, 918 West Lake, Minneapolis. Photographer: Norton & Peel Photograph Collection 1957”
Yes, I know this isn’t the Totino’s on Central over Northeast (I’ve already posted a picture of that.) But people that care about Minneapolis history should know that the city’s Historic Preservation Commission is going to hear an application from Hillcrest Development to demolish the building, also known as the Wheaton & Reynolds Building, for some random “mixed use development”.
If you’re curious about it and/or able to attend, the commission is holding its hearing on Tuesday at City Hall. Gets started at 5:30. Here’s the proposal. (.pdf)
Also, I never knew that Totino’s had a place in South Minneapolis twixt Uptown and Lyn-Lake. (Lake & Colfax)

Not sure what French Fried Shrimp is, but it sounds great!

Hands down, AccuWeather.com’s long-range experts agree that the Midwest and Great Lakes region will be dealt the worst of winter this year.
In terms of both snow and cold, this winter is expected to be the worst in Chicago.
AccuWeather.com Long-Range Meteorologist Josh Nagelberg even went so far as to say, “People in Chicago are going to want to move after this winter.”
However, for the worst of winter’s cold alone, the AccuWeather.com Long-Range Forecasting Team points to Minneapolis.

BRB, committing suicide.

Fuck you, AccuWeather.  Fuck you right in the ear.

Farmer’s Almanac agrees

National Award for 3 Neighborhood Newspapers

midtownmpls:

Congrats to 3 Minneapolis neighborhood organizations for receiving national recognition for their community newspapers.  Lyndale, Corcoran and Standish-Ericsson neighborhood orgs all publish top-notch papers, mostly written and edited by volunteers.  This community journalism plays a huge role in creating an informed and involved citizenry. Here’s my brief story at Twin Cities Daily Planet.

I’m very angry that many hardworking employees will face financial ruin because they live paycheck to paycheck (like most working families). I’m angry that at 60 years of age, after 30 years of employment, with a husband on Social Security, and while taking care of my 82 year old sister I have to serve as a pawn in a political stand-off.

Jill, a state employee bracing for a government shutdown in Minnesota who shared her thoughts with The Intelligencer.

Read more at The Waiting game: How state employees are preparing at home for a government shutdown.

I have to serve as a pawn in a political stand-off.

Yep, this. Over and over and over again.

Perfect. Let’s map the properties so the people who go in and gut properties for copper and architectural treasures don’t have to search themselves, they can just look at the map. I don’t believe I’ll be helping out with this project.

Kassie Church, with an interesting point in the comments section on our story about vacant properties in Minneapolis.

Of course, any industrious copper thieves plugging “vacant properties in Minneapolis” into Google will find the city source file for this map first. It’s public data.

)

I’d imagine they can tell just fine by walking around. But Kassie makes a good point, as does MinnPost.

Minnesota Republicans are pushing legislation that would make it a crime for people on public assistance to have more $20 in cash in their pockets any given month. This represents a change from their initial proposal, which banned them from having any money at all.
